what is PEM membrane cell

PEM cell is the cell that use PEM membrane as electrode.It mainly include PEM electrolysis cell and PEM hydrogen fuel cell.Here we mainly introduce PEM electrolysis cell.(if you want to learn about PEM fuel cell,please refer click fuel cell.

PEM cell is used to decompose pure water into pure hydrogen and pure oxygen .So it is the key part to make hydrogen production system.It use solid polymer electrode instead of traditional lye liquid electrote.so it is more higher electrolysis efficiency and smaller size which take only very small space.No need lye liquid any more,it only need pure water,so it is very user friendly.becase traditional lye electrode have corrosion for skin and machine parts. So PEM membrane cell is very welcomed by user.PEM membrane made by Nafion ion exchange membrane coating platinium and iridium catalyst as anode and chathod.

Principle of PEM hydrogen cell

PEM membrane only allow cation and water pass throw.(Note:Pure water should meet the requirement that conductivity<1 μS/cm).Put qualified pure water into the anode chamber of PEM membrane cell, then switch power on ,it will be decomposed at once at the anode : 2H2O = 4H+ + 2O-2. The decomposed negative oxyanion (O-2) will immediately release electron to form oxygen (O2) gas.The hydrogen proton, in the form of aqua ion (H+.XH2 O), and under the action of electric field force, through SPE ion membrane, will arrive in the cathode to absorb electron to form hydrogen gas.below diagrammatic sketch can reflect above reaction process.if you want to learn more PEM technical detail,please email to [email protected]
