The principle of PEM hydrogen fuel cell

The principle of fuel cell power generation is similar to that of primary or secondary batteries, where hydrogen oxidation and oxygen reduction reactions occur on both sides of the electrolyte membrane. Electrons work through an external circuit, and the reaction product is water (Figure 1). However, unlike the original battery, the reactants in a fuel cell are not pre stored inside the battery, but are introduced into the fuel gas and oxidized gas during the reaction and discharged into the product. Therefore, a fuel cell is not an energy storage device but a conversion device, and its electrodes and electrolytes are not directly involved in the reaction process.

Compose of fuel cell

Fuel cell power generation requires a relatively complex system, which includes fuel supply subsystem, oxidant supply subsystem, hydrothermal management subsystem, and electrical management and control subsystem in addition to the fuel cell stack. Its main system components include air compressor, humidifier, hydrogen circulation pump, high-pressure hydrogen cylinder, etc. These subsystems, together with the fuel cell stack, form the fuel cell power generation system. The complexity of fuel cell systems poses challenges to operational reliability.

Polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell are currently a hot research topic in the application of fuel cell vehicles. PEM fuel cells are made of several layers of different materials. The main components of PEM fuel cells are shown in Figure 3. The core of PEM fuel cells is membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs), including membranes, catalyst layers, and gas diffusion layers (GDLs). Hardware components are used for a means of merging into the fuel cell, including gaskets, which provide a seal to prevent gas leakage, and dual phase steel plates for assembling personal PEM fuel cells with fuel cell stacks and providing gas fuel and air channels.
